These signs have been through many iterations of colors and animal designs, but this is the first time they wanted the animals colored in! If you look at the last few pics here, you will see what the signs used to look like over the years. Some of the animals were kind of unidentifiable so we took some liberties with a few of them Another big change was the color of the border. Historically, it’s usually been a very dark color, and instead we went with Sparkling Emerald by BehrPaint. We used it on some of the other fences too. It’s such a pretty green!
There are 2 entry gate signs and they are each 16ft long! The zoo kindly delivered them to my house and I barely had room in our garage to work on them–partly because we were working on the tiger in there at the same time. Luckily they could each be dismantled into two 8 ft pieces. The longest piece I worked on in my garage was the 30 ft long sign for Heartdance studio in Lansing. That was very difficult in the garage!
I had to do a lot of digging on the internet to find the previous iterations of this sign. I don't even think I have pictures of them all, but above is one version from 2010 that I found taken by Paula Longshore.
The sign above might be from 2023, but I'm not sure.
Above is last year's version (2024)
First part of the process was determining what the animals are even supposed to be!
Then I created a sketch showing both a version where the animals are colored in and one where they are just outlines like the last version. They liked the animals colored in better. You will also see that I had made the lemur a King Vulture just because that was the zoo's animal that best fit the embossed shape on the sign. The zoo really liked the idea of a lemur and were ok with it not fitting the shape. Ultimately it's not even noticeable that the shape is a little different than the animal. Paint changes everything! I love the lemur!
This is what the shape looked like previously. Has both bird vibes and critter vibes.
Here is the finished lemur. You can barely see the shapes that don't fit around his head.
Before I started painting, I sent a final sketch.

We worked on the tiger alongside these signs. My garage was a mess for half of the year! We still haven’t finished getting it back together. Now I will be working on a blog for the tiger refurbishing process. Stay tuned!
