Finished week 4 of building our float! Here is what week 4 consisted of: creating giant cardboard ornaments to line the side of the float, painting an umbrella tree, sturdying our bauble dangler tree, painting more small decorations, finishing building the reindeer and priming it, and starting to build the structure on the trailer.
Below are two of the main elements of our float. The first one is an umbrella that will hopefully resemble one of those ceramic christmas tree lamp decorations once we put the lights on it. Under that is the reindeer Tod made out of cardboard and paper mache with it’s pink primer on it ready to be painted. In the background is the candy house, awaiting more candy decorations, and a stack of ornaments behind that.
We received a majority of the lights that will be used on the float. Lots of pink lights and also found these really pretty pastel “easter” lights! The white cloth is actually frost cloth for gardening, but we are going to use it for snow. I have wanted to do pink snow from the beginning, so we are just going to light it pink and not bother painting the frost cloth.
Below is a picture of Tod standing on the trailer looking at the layout of our float. It took us about an hour of re-arranging the objects over and over again to figure out what design we liked. We were taking into consideration how to make the load more even and also have it be attractive. Not pictured – Tod built a whole platform on top of the trailer so that the objects would all be raised above the railing on the sides of the trailer.
That concludes our week 4 build! Now onto week 5, which will be fortifying the structure, test driving it, finishing touches on decoration, and then testing lighting!! We also just got our parade line up – we are #21 in a parade of 71 floats and bands. Thanks for following our progress!
