Silver Bells Parade Float Build Week 2

Our second week has consisted of arranging our workspace at the Okemos Coffee Shop, priming things to be painted, and blocking out our overall layout of the float. We’ve had some awesome volunteers – Amanda Leksche of Paint Your Poison, Brenda Lochinski, Jennifer Burley, and Cindy Miller! Our sponsor, Angela Risk, gave us her kid’s play house to use on the float! We are hoping to use it to hide a generator inside. It’s going to be a teal gingerbread house–probably more like a “candy house” since it won’t be brown. I accidentally got gray primer in addition to my old can of white primer. Not a huge deal, we are scrappy and roll with the punches.

We got a few cans of fancy spray paint donated, including this can of Sugar spray by Ironlak that I have never tried before. The color is so pretty! Matches the van! MTN 94 actually smells more like sugar, and this Sugar smells more like vinegar.

Tod has been working on the construction of things including the reindeer. We think the reindeer will be the hardest part of the float and have been going back and forth on how to build it. I think we left off at building the center out of cardboard (like his concept pic above), and then using chicken wire and paper mache to cover it. We think we need 2 deer since the float will be viewed from both sides. Lots of work! He has also been working on a vintage inspired Econolite Santa Motion Lamp out of an old patio umbrella, chicken wire, and paper mache.

That concludes Week 2! Check back weekly for updates on our progress!
