This is what a couple of artists were up to on Christmas Eve 2019! Tod got off work early to make this elaborate cake after being inspired by binge watching too many seasons of Netflix‘s Nailed It!–a reality cake baking competition for average Joe Shmoe’s to win $10,000 by failing the least at baking and sculpting an elaborate cake. Contestants use all sorts of professional products from fondant, rice krispie treats, flash freezers, and inedible apparatuses like wooden skewers to stack everything together and create sculptural cakes.

Tod has never attempted such a feat. He has never used fondant or made buttercream but he does bake a mean boxed cake. He did get a hot tip from me: I have tried to make 100% butter buttercream and decorate with it but it’s way too melty so I told him he actually needed Crisco to keep it the right consistency! I spent a long time hating on Crisco but it def has it’s place in the baking world! I learned this the hard sloppy way fo sho–tho that buttercream did taste AMAZING! Tod is a great artist (you can check out his work here: todparkhill.com) so he thought he would have a leg up in such a competition.
